Pain on the front of the leg, especially along the shinbone, is known as shin splints. Other symptoms may include slight swelling of the front of the leg, and pain that is worse during and after exercise. The main cause of shin splints is overworking the leg, especially when starting a new exercise program.
It is important to make sure shin pain is not being caused by a stress fracture, tendinitis, or other condition. Treatment for shin splints includes rest, NSAIDs to reduce pain, and making sure the proper footwear is used when exercising.
