Athletes are susceptible to sports injuries anywhere on the body, and there are a number of bone, ligament, muscle, and skin injuries that are not specific to one joint or appendage. Sports played, play style, and play or workout intensity can all contribute to where and to what degree one of the more general sports injuries are sustained.
There are many risk factors for developing a stress fracture, and different sports put athletes at risk for fractures in different locations.

Pain and tenderness at the fracture site is a common stress factor symptom, but athletes may also experience pain that worsens over time, a deep nagging ache, or pain that appears shortly after activity.

Bone spurs occur when new bone cells form small protrusions on a bone. There are two types of bone spurs—osteophytes and enthesophytes—but these two terms are sometimes used interchangeably.
